Foreign students study Vietnamese language in Vietnam

A closing ceremony for Vietnamese Sachsen-Anhalt state language courses for the 2005 - 2007 period was held in Magdeburg city, Germany.

The event drew the participation of over 300 students, their parents, teachers, representatives from the Vietnam-Germany Magdeburg Friendship Association, the local study encouragement association and the overseas Vietnamese Associations in Wittenberg, Gardelegen, Zalzland, Halberstadt, Wernigeroder, and Quedlinburg.

Only 30 students attended the first classes on Vietnamese language, but 3 years later, the numbers have increasingly gone up. At present, the classes are available in most cities within Sachsen-Anhalt with hundreds of students participating.

Though there were only 2 Vietnamese teachers at the beginning, the number of teachers has continuously increased with many of them having experience of teaching in Vietnam.

The classes which were regarded as a spontaneous movement at their onset, have now become one of the most important tasks for the overseas Vietnamese Association in Sachsen-Anhalt. It is not easy for overseas Vietnamese to teach their homeland’s language to their children. Attending these courses, their offspring have an opportunity not only to study Vietnamese language but also to learn more about Vietnamese culture and traditions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Van Thinh, Chairman of the Vietnam-Germany Magdeburg Friendship Association, Head of the organising board of the Vietnamese learning movement, stressed that “our current activities reflect our love for the homeland, and time, dedication and unity will ensure they are a success”.

On this occasion, the organising board handed over prizes and certificates of merit to outstanding students in Vietnamese learning.

The ceremony ended with arts performances by students at the Sao Mai club.
