Vietnam, Myanmar bolster defense cooperation
PANO - Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and visiting Myanmar Major General Than Htut Thein agreed that the two sides should concentrate on carrying out numerous cooperative fields to realize the memorandum of understanding on bilateral defense ties between Vietnam and Myanmar which was inked in 2011.
Both generals reached that agreement during the reception at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense on July 28.

Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Vinh highly appreciated the visit of Major General Than Htut Thein, Deputy Director of the General Department of Security-Military of Myanmar, saying that it would contribute to enhancing the friendship between the two militaries.
For his part, Gen. Than Htut Thein thanked Gen. Vinh for a warm reception.
According to the generals, main cooperative fields included an early establishment of a dialogue mechanism on defense policy at deputy ministerial level, further cooperation on training, defense industry, military medicine, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, overcoming war consequences, and United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Both sides agreed on further sharing border management experience, smuggling and crime prevention and control.
They also highlighted the need to boost consultation and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially in the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the ADMM Plus (ADMM+).
