Vietnam received unanimous support from ASEAN member states to be the only candidate of the grouping for the seat. It was the only Asian candidate of the Francophone community for the position as well.

Vietnam’s membership of the UNHRC, a leading important U.N. agency in protecting and promoting human rights, demonstrated the international community’s acknowledgement and appreciation on the country’s policies, great efforts, and achievements in further ensuring the rights of its people in all fields.

The election result held important significance. It was seen as a new step in the country’s efforts to actualize the foreign policy regulated at the 13th National Party Congress and the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat’s Directive No.25 on promoting and enhancing multilateral diplomacy by 2030.

Answering the queries of the press right after the announcement of the election result, head of the Vietnamese delegation Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Quang Hieu affirmed that the result showed not only the recognition of the international community for Vietnam's achievements in ensuring human rights, but also the outcomes of the close leadership and direct engagement of high-ranking leaders, the efforts of the entire political system, including the media and the press in protecting and promoting human rights.

The Vietnamese diplomat stressed that it was a testament to the country’s constantly increasing and strengthened position and prestige of Vietnam in the international arena.

Emphasizing the importance of the UNHRC and the high competitiveness among candidates for a seat at the U.N. agency, especially in the Asia-Pacific regional group, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the U.N. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang attributed the election result to the joint efforts of ministries, departments, diplomatic cadres at home and abroad to overcome difficulties, challenges, conduct methodical, proactive, creative, synchronous and effective mobilization work over the past time.

With the message “Mutual Respect. Dialogue and Cooperation. Ensuring All Human Rights, for All,” for its three-year membership at the UNHRC, Vietnam will make direct contribution to protecting and promoting human rights in the world, one of the three main tasks of the U.N.

During its tenure, Vietnam will promote priorities identified through dialogues and cooperation, particularly the protection of vulnerable groups and the assurance of human rights in response to global issues. These will help address shared concerns and urgent issues facing mankind and open up opportunities for Vietnam to exchange experience and take advantage of international support, help Vietnamese people better enjoy human rights and citizens’ rights.
