PANO – Vietnam and Germany have agreed in principle to select and train Vietnamese nurses for geriatric care in Germany.

The information came from the signing of a Letter of Intent between the German Ambassador to Vietnam Jutta Frasch and the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) Nguyen Thanh Hoa in Hanoi on July 1st.

Future trainees will be required to complete a one-year German language course to meet requirements at the Goethe-Institute in Hanoi, as well as other courses before working in Germany.

Meanwhile, training centres in Germany must cover costs for the entry of trainees and provide them with grants to cover living expenses.

As many as 200 candidates will commence their language training course at the Goethe-Institute in Hanoi this August, after which they will be sent to Germany to study nursing in 2016. After that, they will work in the elderly care sector with working conditions consistent with their German co-workers.

Germany is facing a shortage of qualified geriatric nurses due to demographic changes. Therefore, it is welcoming foreign qualified nurses to fill the gap.
