Seminar spotlights Vietnam’s candidacy for non-permanent UNSC seat
Vietnam’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reflects the country’s determination to pursue a foreign policy of diversification and multilateralization as well as its active and responsible participation in international forums and organizations.
Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy made the statement at an international seminar themed “Vietnam and the United Nations Security Council: Toward Election and Membership for 2020-2021” in Hanoi on March 30.
Running for this post for the second time after the successful 2008-2009 tenure also shows the country’s resolve to perform its foreign policy of peace for national independence, cooperation and development, he added.

Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) Nguyen Vu Tung stressed that opportunities and challenges facing Vietnam during the process will help the country build sound policies and have good preparations when participating in the UNSC.
At the event, participants exchanged views on opportunities and challenges facing a non-permanent UNSC member, and shared experience in bringing into full play opportunities and dealing with challenges.
The seminar was jointly organized by the DAV and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Foundation, drawing the participation of Swedish Ambassador to the UNSC for 2017-2018 Olof Skoog, representatives of embassies and international organizations in Hanoi, and Vietnamese ministries and sectors.
