Huy highlighted GTA as a valuable tool that helps policymakers monitor partner countries’ trade and industrial policies, noting that in the context of fast-changing global economy, reliable data and in-depth analysis are essential for Vietnam to strengthen early warning and respond proactively to trade risks, especially in trade defense.
Recently, the Vietnam's Permanent Mission to Geneva has worked closely with the St. Gallen Endowment on strengthening policy analysis capacity, Huy said, expressing the hope that the foundation will work closer with domestic agencies in data usage, analytical capacity building, and early warning support.
Eydlin, who is also Director of the Capacities for Trade Policies (C4TP) program, provided an overview of the foundation and its initiatives, including GTA and other in-depth analytical tools such as Trade Defense Monitor and Import Dynamics.
GTA is an independent platform that compiles trade policies from over 60 countries covering goods, services, foreign direct investment (FDI), and labor, based on official sources. It tracks more than 60 policy instruments, and provides reports by policy type, affected sectors and products, and impacted trading partners.
Regarding trade defense, Eydlin noted that GTA provides real-time information on G20 countries’ trade defense actions, issuing alerts by investigating country, country of origin, product, and targeted company - valuable for Vietnam to identify export risks early. GTA also supports case assessment by leveraging data from trade defense investigations in other markets, reviewing subsidy programs, and tracking recent product trade trends to evaluate potential damages.
Joining online in the session, Chu Thang Trung, Deputy Director of TRAV, commended the St. Gallen for its valuable information and posed questions regarding GTA’s operations and the Swiss endowment’s support for relevant Vietnamese agencies.
Eydlin said his agency stands ready to provide access rights and training on using the tool to monitor measures affecting Vietnam’s exports; organize workshops on trade policy, industrial policy, and digital trade; and supply tailored analytical reports, such as assessments of opportunities and challenges for Vietnam’s exports.
