Salt-making in Tuyet Diem
PANO - There is a place in Phu Yen province where people still diligently harvest salt despite blazing sun. It is Tuyet Diem village in Xuan Binh commune, Song Cau town. The village is famous for its nearly 150-years-old salt-making trade.
In this village, there are two ways to make granulated salt. Traditionally, salt is extracted from natural water with low salinity, thus the harvesting time is longer. In the second way, salt is collected from salty groundwater. The time for salt production in this way is some five days shorter than that of the traditional one.
After harvesting, salt is put in clay pots and placed in a kiln for 12 hours.
Tuyet Diem salt-making trade village was recognized by the Phu Yen provincial People’s Committee as a traditional trade village.
Below are several photos of the Tuyet Diem salt-making process taken by photographer Le Chau Dao.
