10 sugar plants in the Mekong River Delta have committed to purchase more than 400,000 tones of sugar cane that were submerged in flood waters in Phung Hiep District and Nga Bay in Hau Giang Province.
The activity is in response to an appeal made at a conference in the southern province by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Sugar and Sugar Cane Association.
According to Mr. Le Xuan, an official at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry recommended to sugar plants and companies that they should launch measures to reduce their production costs and increase the price of sugar cane to make up for farmers’ losses.
From September 15th, three sugar plants in the province will start buying sugar cane. Five days later, the other sugar factories in the Mekong River Delta region will join the campaign .
