Woodblocks of Phuc Giang School displayed in Hanoi
PANO - The Museum of Ha Tinh province, in association with the Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature) Cultural and Scientific Center, held an exhibition of the woodblocks of Phuc Giang School as a documentary heritage on May 23.
The woodblocks comprise 383 well-preserved pieces, with 25-30cm length, 15-18cm width, 1-2cm thickness, and made of precious thi tree wood. Each woodblock is a unique work of art, aesthetically carved with beautiful calligraphic styles.
Accordingly, the exhibition displayed nearly 100 objects, including documents, books, pictures, translated versions and copies of the woodblocks. The blocks, used to print text books for Phuc Giang School, were built by well-known scholar Nguyen Huy Oanh in Ha Tinh province in the mid-18th century.
They are important documents of the Confucian education in Vietnam, contributing to training talented students for the country from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century. Presently, the set of woodblocks was preserved by the museum and the descendants of the Nguyen Huy family in Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province.
The set of woodblocks of Phuc Giang School was recognized as a documentary heritage by UNESCO’s Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) on May 19, 2016.
The exhibition will run till May 30, 2017 at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi.
