Hoang Ho Khanh Van, a student from the Conservatory of Hanoi, won the first prize in violin for students under 12 at the third Jakarta International Music Competition held in Indonesia from August 6th to 16th.

Khanh Van was born in 1997 in Minsk, Belarus. At the age of 4, she and her elder sister were selected to study violin and piano, respectively, in a conservatory in Minsk. Along with awards from Minsk Violin competitions, Khanh Van received the second prize in a Belarus competition when she was only 8 years old.

In 2005, the sisters followed their parents back to Vietnam. Since then, Khanh Van has been studying violin at the Hanoi Conservatory.

In 2006, Khanh Van won the third prize for violin at the local Yellow Autumn Music Competition.

The Jakarta International Music Competition is organised bi-annually with the participation of students from all over Southeast Asia, with Chinese and Japanese students also eligible to take part.

This is the first time Vietnam sent violin students to take part, as previously only piano students took part in such contests.
