ASEAN, India step up digital connectivity
The ASEAN-India Connectivity Summit kicked off in India’s capital city of New Delhi on December 11 under the theme of “Powering digital and physical linkages for Asia in the 21st century.”
The two-day event aims to promote
prospects for digital and physical linkages between ASEAN and India, identify
relevant matters, implement proposals on suitable policies and develop
strategies enhancing economic, industrial and commercial ties between the two
sides.
ASEAN brings together ten countries,
including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia,
Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand
and Vietnam.
ASEAN and India have a total population of
1.85 billion, making up a quarter of the world’s total figure.
Their accumulated gross domestic
product (GDP) is expected to exceed 3.8 trillion USD. Two-way trade revenue
stood at 65.04 billion USD in 2015-2016, accounting for 10.12 percent of the
total trade value between India
and the world.
Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi
has recently affirmed that enhancing India-ASEAN connectivity by road, sea and
air routes is India’s
top priority.
He said the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway
will be expanded to three other countries.
