Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses which causes 650,000 fatalities and about 3-5 million serious cases across the globe every year, including more than one million cases in Vietnam.
Accordingly, the results have shown that both vaccines are safe and capable of producing immune responses in healthy adults. The testing vaccines include inactivated seasonal influenza vaccine against three strains of influenza: A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B, and vaccine against avian influenza A/H5N1.
According to Dr. Le Van Be, Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, the two vaccines have been studied for more than nine years and undergone clinical trials in three phases. Each influenza vaccine has been tested on more than 1,000 people.
The vaccines are expected to be licensed in 2019 with a capacity of 1-1.5 million doses per year and it will be sold at prices between VND 80,000-100,000 per dose.
Recently, Vietnam has also successfully produced the Hib vaccine to protect children from respiratory diseases and purulent meningitis caused by the Haemophilusinfluenzae type B. This is considered the most complicated vaccine as it is made under a series of intensive refinement. The vaccine is selected as one of the products under the National Product Development Program by 2020.
Vietnam has so far produced 10 vaccines against tuberculosis, measles, rubella, rota, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and measles-rubella.
