Project on drowning prevention for children launched
PANO - Project on drowning prevention for children was launched on September 9 with the participation of Standing Deputy-Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ha Cong Tuan; Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee for Search and Rescue, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh.
According to Deputy-Minister Ha Cong Tuan, Vietnam is a country with a lot of rivers and streams and is heavily affected by natural disasters, especially disasters related to water. The stormy and flooding season poses a high risk of drowning to children. It is reported that there is on an average 2,800 children who die of drowning every year. In order to reduce these painful and pitiful losses, besides the concern of authorities at all levels, it is necessary to coordinate efforts of the whole society in raising people's awareness of drowning prevention for children, contributing to building a safer society for them.
On this occasion, the Department of the Civil Self-Defense and Militia Forces under the General-Staff-of the Vietnam People's Army and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Control signed a cooperation program on disaster prevention and control activities at the grassroots level.
Speaking at the event, General Minh emphasized that the signing ceremony is one of the creative thinking and innovative ideas on implementing the viewpoints and directions of the Party's leadership as well as the legal documents on the laws on disaster control in 2013.
General Minh believed that the cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will gain more practical achievements in the coming time.
