Floods take heavy toll in Northern and North Central localities
PANO – The recent tropical depression triggered huge floods and caused heavy human and property losses in the Northern and North Central regions of Vietnam. According to an initial estimate on October 11, the floods left 29 dead and 21 missing and inundated numerous areas. The Prime Minister directed localities, ministries and sectors and relevant units to quickly respond to the floods and mitigate the damage.
At a meeting between the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and relevant agencies on the afternoon of October 11, participants were briefed upon the consequences of the floods.

Consequently, the floods claimed 13 dead or missing in the Northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, destroyed over 700 houses with an initial estimated loss of around VND 100 billion. Thia Bridge collapsed, separating Nghia Lo town from other areas of the province. Meanwhile, the floods left 11 dead or missing, collapsed 39 houses and inundated over 6,000 others in the North Central province of Thanh Hoa. Likewise, torrential rains flooded many areas in Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province. Six hundred locals were evacuated to safe areas.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung requested the localities and relevant agencies to quickly evacuate people out of the dangerous areas, promptly reach isolated areas to rescue those hit by flood and provide them with food and other essentials.
