Belgian and Vietnamese doctors and surgeons transplanted liver for a 12-month-old baby at Ho Chi Minh City’s Pediatrics Hospital 2 on December 7.

This is the seventh-ever liver transplant done in the city on a year-old child and the patient, Tang Ngoc My, is said to be the lightest weight baby to transplant liver so far.

She weighs 7.1 kg and is 64 cm in height.

Tang Ngoc My had undergone another surgery when she was two-and-a-half months old after being diagnosed with jaundice and congenital bile duct atrophy.

However, the duct then became infected and she developed cirrhosis. Her condition was reportedly worsening before the latest operation.

Given the fact, Belgian and Vietnamese doctors have decided to take a piece of liver from her mother, Nguyen Ngoc Phuong, 28, for the transplant.

The hospital did not charge her family the cost of the surgery which normally costs around 250 million VND (13,500USD).
