Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi began construction on a tumour and cardiovascular centre for children on July 2, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

Addressing the ground breaking ceremony, Deputy PM Nhan said that the country is facing many difficulties, and many projects had to be delayed due to the lack of state funds; however, the Government approved the project to build the tumour and cardiovascular centre for children, which indicates its importance for the country.

He also expressed his hope that Bach Mai hospital will try its best to put the centre into operation soon.

Deputy PM Nhan noted that the centre has a great significance for children, marking the great progress of Bach Mai hospital and he believes it will become the most modern facility in Vietnam for examination and treatment.

The centre is located in the hospital precinct and it will be 21 - storey tall with 500 beds. The funding is sourced from government bonds and other capital from Bach Mai hospital.

The building covers an area of 3,415 square metres and has total investment of over VND1, 456 billion. It is expected to alleviate the overloaded situation regarding tumour and cardiovascular treatment for children and become a good environment for scientific research and training for local healthcare workers.

The centre is scheduled for completion in 2015.
