The festival is held at the communal temple in Thuy Linh village.
The balls are made from jackfruit trees with sizes suitable for competitions of various ages.
The field has five holes, with one at the middle to keep the ball before the match starts. Meanwhile, the four remaining holes are at four corners for four teams. On the field, each team has two members to join the game.
The qualifying round gathers eight teams. The four winners enter the final.
Each team has about eight members. They are able to play the game in shifts.
Each team should find ways to bring the ball to their team’s hole in corners of the field amid the fierce blocking of other team members.
A single match has four separate teams of eight men wearing waist straps of different colors.
Despite simple rule, the game requires teamwork and strength of the participants.
The participants all have good health and the sportsmanship spirit.
The festival is in commemoration of the god Linh Lang Dai Vuong.
The fierce struggle in the game is run amid the excited cheers of the audience.

PANO – Taking place on the fourth, fifth and sixth days of the first month in the lunar calendar, the annual Vat Cau (Ball Wrestling) Festival at Thuy Linh village in Hanoi’s Hoang Mai district is a traditional cultural feature of local people.
