After more than 70 years of ups and downs, people in Tu Van village, Le Loi commune, Thuong Tin district, Hanoi have always been proud of their handicraft of making national flags. Especially, on the occasion of National Day, they often get busier.
Located 30km South of Hanoi, Tu Van village is well-known for its traditional craft of maing national flags. It has made millions of national flags for Vietnam’s major events and holidays.
Although making national flags doesn’t require much skill, the tailors need to be meticulous in their work. Each step requires thorough attention, showing their honor and pride in the job.
In the past, flags were mostly hand-made; however, at present, the production has been automated and programmed. Therefore, more accuracy is needed and productivity gets higher.
The family of Nguyen Van Phuc is one of the long-standing businesses in Tu Van village. He shared that this year, his family had to work overtime to meet customers’ demand. Various kinds of flags such as national flags, Party flags and emulation flags have been sold to many units and wholesalers nationwide.
Annually, when the National Day approaches, Phuc’s family has to recruit more workers to meet the market’s demand.
Flags made by Tu Van experienced tailors are beautiful and last for longer, flown in every corner of the country.
For Tu Van villagers, making a flag is a luck and honor that not everyone has, as the national flag represents the soul of the nation.
For nearly four generations following the flag-making tradition, the family of Le Thi Nhung in Le Loi commune, Thuong Tin district has been busy in production, these days, to promptly send national flags to all parts of the country.
The national flag, a sacred symbol of the nation, is meticulously crafted by Tu Van villagers. Each flag, when finished, will be carefully folded. The process is all carried out with great care and meticulous attention, reflecting the dedication of the villagers.
Many children in Tu Van village join the making of the carry-on national flags. Tu Van has been known as the largest national flag-making village in Hanoi.
