Ngo boat race – traditional sport in Mekong river region
PANO – The Ngo boat race, an indispensable part of the Ok Om Bok Festival in Soc Trang province, highlights the traditional values of the Khmer people.
A Ngo, a 30 meters long boat, is able to hold about 52 to 58 boatmen with a leader at the prow to guide the whole team.
The Ngo boat racing festival 2020 in Soc Trang included 47 teams (42 male and 5 female teams) from regional pagodas and other provinces of Bac Lieu and Kien Giang.
The first prize went to the Tum Nup 2 team from Tum Nup pagoda (An Ninh commune, Chau Thanh district, Soc Trang province), the second one belonged to the team from Om Pou Yea pagoda (Thanh Phu commune, My Xuyen district, Soc Trang province), the third one was presented to Wath Pich pagoda’s team (Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province) and the fourth one was Bang Tone Sa pagoda’s team (Vien An commune, Tran De district, Soc Trang province).
The female team from Ca Nhung pagoda in Go Quao district, Kien Giang province won the championship.
