PANO –Tan Phu Dong district (Tien Giang province) is on Loi Quan isle in the middle of Cua Tieu river. The only way to reach the district is by ferry or boat, and in dry season, fresh water becomes a very rare commodity. The water shortage has become more serious, due to prolonged drought and saltwater intrusion. A 50-m3 rainwater tank of Phu Tan commune has been empty since mid April. Each cubic meter of fresh water transported by the private sector costs around VND 100,000.
In an effort to help people in Phu Tan commune ease the water shortage caused by drought and saline intrusion, the Command of Naval Region II mobilized ships No. 209 and 211 to transport more than 200 m3 of clean water for free from Vung Tau city to drought-hit areas.
