Military active in COVID-19 prevention and control
PANO – A teleconference was held on August in Hanoi under the chair of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to map out measures to effectively prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic.
Senior Lieutenant General Tran Don, Deputy Defense Minister, and Lieutenant General Le Hien Van, Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics, and other leaders of functional units of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) attended the conference.
According to Acting Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long, the outbreak in the Central city of Da Nang has been gradually controlled. The spread of the disease in the community has been limited and the number of new infections has dropped in recent days. Most of the fatalities related to COVID-19 had underlying health conditions.

Regarding the pandemic prevention and control in the military, General Don highlighted that right after the re-outbreak of COVID-19, the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control under the MND has implemented many measures in the whole military, especially in Da Nang city and Military Region 5. The MND has also boosted dissemination among troops to raise their awareness of the pandemic prevention and control measures. In addition, the ministry has also prepared personnel as well as equipment and vehicles, to undertake tasks when needed.
The MND has sent experts from the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center with a vehicle-based mobile laboratory to Da Nang and localities under Military Region 5. So far, 5,383 samples were tested, including 2,149 of soldiers and 3,234 of civilians.
Meanwhile, the border guard force has been directed to strictly control border areas to prevent illegal border crossings. The MND has also boosted cooperation in COVID-19 drug and vaccine research. Particularly, three Cuban experts have been invited to Vietnam to work with their Vietnamese colleagues in transferring technology and producing COVID-19 vaccine and drugs.
Concluding the conference, PM Phuc acknowledged and hailed great efforts of ministries and agencies in general and the MND in particular, asking them to closely work together to strictly manage border areas to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
