Top legislator meets IPU President in Saint Petersburg
The National Assembly of Vietnam will soon implement the sustainable development goals (SDGs) self-assessment toolkit built by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Vietnamese NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the pledge at a meeting with IPU President Saber Chowdhury in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on October 14 before attending the 137th IPU Assembly.
The two sides at the meeting
Ngan thanked the IPU President for attending and sharing his experience at an IPU symposium on climate change adaptation held Ho Chi Minh City in May.
She also spoke highly of President Chowdhury’s contributions to the IPU’s activities during the 2014 – 2017 tenure and expressed her belief that the IPU will continue promoting its role and position as the world’s largest parliamentary cooperation organisation and supporting its member parliaments for peace, democracy, cooperation and sustainable development.
For his part, President Chowdhury lauded the Vietnamese NA’s dynamic and responsible participation in the IPU’s activities as well as its strict implementation of the IPU’s resolutions.
He believed that the relationship between the IPU and Vietnam will develop further and Vietnam will make more effective and practical contributions to IPU in the years to come.
Ngan affirmed that the Vietnamese parliament will include SDGs in the nation’s socio-economic development programmes in line with the Hanoi Declaration ratified at IPU-132 held in Vietnam in 2015.
On this occasion, the NA Chairwoman handed over a letter of invitation to President Chowdhury to attend the 26th Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) to be hosted by Vietnam in January 2018.
