Kicked off in Kampong Chhnang province, about 100km from the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, the project reaffirms the great significance of the support of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers towards the Cambodian people and military to overthrow the genocidal regime of Pol Pot on January 7th 1979.
According to Kampong Chhnang’s Mayor Chhu Chan Deon, the memorial of the province is located in the centre of the province. The embellishment of the memorial is necessary as it represents the close friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia, he said.
At the event, Vietnamese Defence Attaché to Cambodia, Colonel Nguyen Anh Dung, told reporters that the memorial in Kampong Chhnang is one of four monuments to be embellished in this January. Later, a further 12 memorials will be upgraded.
As approved by relevant Vietnamese and Cambodian agencies, in 2015 and 2016 several memorials of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodian provinces have been upgraded.
