From Russia with love: Bui Cong Duy performing at the Ha Noi Opera House two years ago

Tchaikovsky International Music Competition winner Bui Cong Duy will perform at the HCM City Opera House next Thursday.

Duy, 26, will play A Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4 in F. minor. Op 36. He will be accompanied by the HCM City Ballet and Symphony Orchestra.

The first son of artist couple Pham Thuy Loan, a cello teacher, and Bui Cong Thanh, a violin teacher, Duy started to learn the violin from his father when he was just five. At nine he won the first prize in the 1990 Autumn National Music Competition.

In 1991, the ten-year old entered Russia's Novosibirk Music Conservatory to study violin and won first prize at international violin contests organised in Novosibirsk and St Petersburg in both 1993 and 1995.

Then, in 1997, he won the big prize - the Tchaikovsky International Music Competition for violinists under 18.

A graduate of the Tchaikovsky Music Institute in Moscow, Duy now teaches the violin at the Ha Noi Conservatory of Music and is a member of the Ha Noi Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has given recitals in many countries including Russia, Poland, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

The Thursday concert is at 8pm at the Opera House, District 1, HCM City. Tickets, costing VND60,000 to VND150,000, are available at the box office.
