A number of activities have been taking place across the country to bring a warm traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) to local people.

The southern province of Kien Giang spent over VND 8.2 billion (USD 369,000) on gifts to social welfare beneficiaries and national contributors, including Vietnamese heroic mothers, and soldiers on missions in island and border areas.

Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho spent VND 93.8 billion (USD 4.2 million) on supporting social welfare beneficiaries and poor families.

The Association for Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin Victims in the central city of Da Nang on January 14 presented 50 gift packages, each worth VND 600,000 (USD 27) each to AO victims in Hoa Vang district.

The city is now home to over 5,000 AO victims, including 1,400 children born deformed as a result of the toxic chemical, said President of the association Nguyen Thi Hien.

The same day, the Association for AO/Dioxin Victims in the southern province of Tay Ninh honoured organizations and individuals who made contributions towards taking care of AO victims.

In 2015, the association raised over VND 4 billion (USD 180,000) to help the victims repair houses, and present hundreds of wheelchairs.
