Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in Hanoi have raised more than VND4 billion for charity activities, said Most Venerable Thich Bao Nghiem, deputy head of the managing board of the Hanoi Buddhist Sangha.

Buddhists in Dong Da precinct alone contributed VND1.37 billion to the total funding of VND4.39 billion, he added.

The donations have been channelled to aid the poor, underprivileged children, helpless old people, war invalids and families of fallen soldiers, AO victims and flood victims.
Hanoi-based pagodas have provided 151 poor children with VND50,000 a child per month. Especially, Bo De pagoda (Long Bien precinct) is caring for more than 40 orphans and helpless old persons, Tu Khoat pagoda (Thanh Tri district) sponsors AO victim children in three nearby communes, and Nhu Khanh pagoda (Tu Liem district) opens a consulting room to give free traditional medicinal treatment to local people.

The Hanoi Buddhist Church built 25 houses and provided 12 wheelchairs and other aid packages for underprivileged people and established four HIV/AIDS consultancy centres in pagodas.

The Hanoi Buddhist Sangha plans to hold its 6th congress by the end of September.
