The sixth National Congress of the Vietnam Youth Union opened in Hanoi on April 27 with the participation of more than 1,000 outstanding young people from within the country and abroad.
The event was also attended by Party leader Nong Duc Manh, former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung and Vice National Assembly Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong.
In his speech, Party leader Manh praised the contributions young people have made to the cause of national construction. Under the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, many young people, together with the party, people and the armed forces won a glorious victory in their past struggle for national liberation and the current Doi Moi (Renewal) process, Mr Manh emphasised.
Over the past few years, Vietnam’s Youth Union have got young people’s involved in movements aimed at reducing poverty, building new lives for themselves in order to make Vietnam become a strong nation with rich people living in a just, democratic and civilised society.
Mr Manh called on all Vietnamese young people to uphold the national tradition of studying and working hard to contribute to the nation’s renewal process in the new era.
On the occasion, Party leader Manh presented the Union a hanging which reads “ Vietnamese young people with great ambition, solidarity and creativity for the cause of national construction and defense”.
