PANO – The Vietnam Women’s Union and UN Women on October 6th opened a forum in Hanoi to discuss gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Themed “Women, Peace, and Development,” the forum aims to share information and experience in implementing women’s movements and promote understanding, solidarity, friendship and cooperation among women worldwide for the targets of “Equality, Development and Peace” outlined at the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing (China) and reaffirmed in the recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The forum is also a chance for Vietnam to introduce to the world the land and people, especially women, of Vietnam, the operation of the Vietnam Women’s Union, and the achievements Vietnam as well as Vietnamese women’s movements that have been recorded after 30 years of renovation.

The forum is broken into 3 sessions. The plenary session discusses the Beijing Platform for Action on women and the gender factor in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.
A workshop themed “Women, Peace and Security” focuses on traditional and non-traditional security challenges for women and the role of women in maintaining peace.
A workshop entitled “Women and Development” discusses the challenges for women in development, policies and initiatives ensuring equal and effective participation of women in all aspects of life, especially the economic and political realms.

The forum will issue a joint statement, showing common awareness and commitments to strengthening cooperation and united actions among national and international women organizations for “Equality, Development and Peace.”
