Crossing waves to bring “light” to people in Thanh An

Currently, Thanh An commune has nearly 1,200 households with 5,000 people, of which 5% are poor. To get to the island, people must take local passenger ferries converted from fishing boats, or canoes with higher prices. There are about 12 ferry trips a day between Can Thanh townlet and Thanh An island commune and vice versa. Each trip takes about 30-40 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from VND 15,000-20,000 per person.

According to Pham Minh Chau, Chairman of the Thanh An commune People’s Committee, up to now, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has invested in many building projects, including schools, medical stations, roads and playgrounds, etc. for local people. However, the living standards of people and investment capital are low so that the locality has not yet seen sustainable development.

Major Nguyen Minh Hieu, Political officer of Thanh An Border Station, shared that over the past time, the unit has carried out a number of practical activities. Attentively, the unit and local authority have built a project related to community cultural activity area. The area has been built on the campus of Thanh An Border Station, including reading rooms, the space for cultural and artistic activities; football and volleyball courts, folk games, to name but a few. Meanwhile, they have implemented the "Light in border areas" project, comprising 120 solar-powered lamp poles installed along the 2-km coastal embankment and the entire traffic route in Thieng Lieng hamlet, Thanh An commune, with a total investment of VND 400 million.

In addition, in the first seven months of this year, Thanh An Border Station coordinated with other forces to organize activities to support policy beneficiaries, people and students with difficult conditions.
