The Islamic Cham people in the central province of Ninh Thuan will celebrate their Ramuwan (Ramadan) New Year festival, the biggest of the local Islamic community, from June 4-6.

During the event, all Islamic Cham families gather to pay respect to their ancestors and pray for happiness, bumper crops and peace.

The festival begins with visits to ancestors’ graves and then each family holds ceremonies at home in commemoration of their ancestors.

In recent years, the festival has attracted lots of tourists in and outside the country who want to explore the special cultural characteristics of the Islamic Cham community in the locality.

On the occasion, delegations from the local authorities, and Fatherland Front committee paid visits and presented gifts to several Islamic Cham locals.

Luu Xuan Vinh, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, asked local authorities to work with the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to create favourable conditions for Islamic Cham dignitaries at temples and mosques to celebrate their New Year.
