PANO - A meeting of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee on Land Border Demarcation and Border-marker Planting took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on August 29-30.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Minister and Chairman of the National Border Committee under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung and Senior Minister and Chairman of Cambodia's National Border Committee Var Kim Hong headed the Cambodian delegation.

At the meeting, the Vietnamese and Cambodian officials reviewed their land border demarcation and marker planting as well as land border management over the past time in an atmosphere of friendship, sincerity, frankness, mutual respect and understanding.

Regarding land border demarcation, the two sides acknowledged and highly valued efforts made by forces directly participating in the fieldwork. The two countries have fulfilled about 83 percent of the goals set in the Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries in 1985 and a Supplementary Treaty in 2005.

Both sides discussed related contents to seek suitable measures for addressing shortcomings in implementing the tasks in line with international law. Accordingly, they agreed on several issues including seriously implementing bilateral treaties and agreements on boundary delimitation and territory, and inviting international experts and consultants to step up the work.

They agreed to early discuss a plan on MoU implementation in the Mekong Delta province of Long An and the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, Vietnam to settle down lives of local people. 

The two sides saw the need to accelerate the construction of auxiliary border markers and soon complete demarcation work.

The two sides affirmed, relations between the two countries' border people and localities are continuously reinforced in the spirit of building “good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term stability”. In addition, the two sides discussed several emerging issues along the shared border in an open and straight manner and in the spirit of the 1983 Agreement on the Border Management Regulations and the 1995 Joint Press Release on orientations to deal with border issues.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese head delegate paid a courtesy call to Cambodian Senior Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn.
